Cocaine is the leading drug being used in America and is chipping away at the US piece by piece. Over 6 million people do cocaine every month in the US. In 1996 an estimated 3.6 million Americans were regular cocaine users. This is a devastating number because heavy use of this drug turns a person's life into nothing.
             More than three hundred tons of cocaine is produced and smuggled into the United States every year. The world's cocaine supply is processed in South America. Cocaine is made from a plant called a coca plant it is cultivated and processed in Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Brazil. Some of the world's most notorious drug lords reside in Colombia. These drug lords smuggle drugs into the United States using many different methods. The cocaine is smuggled into the country hidden in teddy bears, handcrafts, golf tires, and boxes of snacks. Drug smugglers sometime even go to the lengths of surgically implanted under their skin, or sometimes even swallow the drug inside of a plastic bag. The drug is brought from South America using land, air, and sea.
             There are many reasons why Americans use and continue to use the drug every year. Peer pressure is the leading reason why people begin to take the addictive drug. Other reasons for using the drug include rebelliousness, low self esteem, and alienation. After using the drug once it is like a vacuum sucking a person in to do it again and again. After a short lived high a person experiences anxiety, depression, irritability, extreme fatigue. And paranoia. Heavy users have compulsive patterns of behavior.
