An Ending Left Unresolved
            
             If ever there was a novel that depicted the true meaning of friendship and true emotional strain of loss then it would be "Of Mice and Men," a literary marvel created by the inner most thoughts of John Steinbeck. Steinbeck, author of "The Grapes of Wrath," is thought of to be one of the most talented authors in literary history. Therefore, it is without doubt that his work is to be criticized and questioned, such is the case with the ending in "Of Mice and Men." It is said to be to bold and on the edge of horrific and shocking. I myself happen to agree with Steinbeck's daring choice to kill off Lennie.
            
             Many people consider the final chapter in the story to be cruel, harsh, murderous, and savage, but in actuality it was the best thing that George could do for his only true friend. Because of the fact that Lennie killed a young woman and was mentally handicapped he was sure to be executed, not necessarily through the judicial system. If the workers were to find him he was sure to be tortured and hung; George's rash and insane decision to kill Lennie was a decision made purely on the basis of love. George loved Lennie with every inch of his soul but could not bear to move to another town again, because eventually he would be doing it all over again in a few short weeks. He knew the only way to truly end the madness of being hated by all was to relieve himself from the root of the problem, Lennie.
             Lennie, wasn't a complete lost cause, he was smart in his own way. He was a strong hard worker that only wanted happiness; in the end he received eternal bliss. He was much like a child in many ways; he had to be told over and over again what not to do and would forget much of the important information George told him to remember.
