Beowulf

             In the epic poem of Beowulf, the audience is consumed by an enchanting tale of mystery and heroism. Many literary techniques contribute to the main character Beowulf. The imagery helps to add flavor to the epic poem. Throughout the story Beowulf endures several changes and as he changes, so do the literary techniques.
             Beowulf begins as a young enchanting warrior without fear who slays several monsters. He is portrayed as a very prestige and nice, clean looking man. As Beowulf comes to the shore in the poem the author describes Beowulf's armor as "gleaming with a smith's high arc." This imagery portrays Beowulf as being a stunning looking warrior. Beowulf tells the king that "my hands alone shall fight for me," showing that he has great courage on taking on the feared Grendel.
             Beowulf lives up to his dream of killing the evil Grendel that haunted the land of the Geats. The author describes Beowulf as he fights "a brave prince" and with "glory in his heart." Beowulf fights with pride and goodness in his heart as he continues to defeat evil, killing Grendel and Grendel's mother.
             Toward the end of the story Beowulf is growing old and is worshiped by the people he had saved from evil. He has become the role model for all the people in the land of the Geats. Beowulf has become king and in order to please his people once more, he decides to defeat the dragon that guards the treasure. Beowulf fights a fierce battle and finally defeats the dragon to serve his people. After Beowulf defeats the dragon the story defines him as "weak and dying." Beowulf paid the ultimate price for his people.
