By this statement Emerson believes that to be a true individual a person has to be nonconformist. A person who is nonconformist is a person who is different for society and/or from any other person in his patterns of actions or thoughts.
             In order for a person to become nonconformist he has to be very independent from the rest of society. The person's actions, thoughts, and believes have to be different and he has to protect them when they come under attack. In this day an age, different groups and organizations try to change a person's beliefs, thoughts, and actions so that they will benefit the organization. If the organization affects people's believes for the benefit of the organization, then you are no longer nonconformist. By joining an organization the person losses their identity, the thing that makes them different from everyone else in the world. In addition to that, they also lost their believes and thoughts because someone else makes the decisions for the.
             An organization that has many people who are not nonconformists is the KKK. KKK is an example of an organization were a person has no control of his life and his actions. The people who are in charge of the organization make the decisions for the rest of the organization, even though someone might have slightly different beliefs about different decisions made for them. When a person become part of an organization like the KKK, then they are nobody, just another face in the crowd.
             Today there are only but few people who are nonconformist. To be a nonconformist means you have to stand alone against the whole society. Nobody wants to be different or even think different because our society doesn't accept those people. To be a true man, like Emerson said; " a person must be a nonconformist"...
