Oration is a formal speech one given at a ceremony. Two of the best orator gave two of the most famous public speeches ever made in the history of our planet: Pericles' Funeral Oration and Abraham Lincoln 's Gettysburg Address. Both speeches were delivered to commemorate those troops who had fallen in the two battles: The Peloponnesian War and the Battle of Gettysburg.
             In 431, Pericles delivered his famous Funeral Oration to commemorate those troops who had fallen in the battle of the Peloponnesian War. When he was asked to give this speech for the Athenian soldiers who had died, he took the event not only to praise the dead, but Athens itself. In the first part of the speech, it focuses on the contribution of the democratic constitution of Athens to the good of Athenian citizens. On the Athenian way of thinking, a good political community is one in which citizens live in a good, and happy life. Also, the Athenian polis contributes to the good of individual citizens in a number of ways, such as equality of opportunity found in public and private life, and freedoms taught in educations. The second part of Pericles' speech focuses on how democratic institutions serve the common goods that lead citizens to choose to serve the good of Athens. They do this primarily in political discussions and military service. For instance, in every meetings, all citizens of Athens believe that their views have been listened to and respected. As a result, they are obligated to respect the democratic decision of the majority. They are motivated to serve the common good because they gain pride, honor, esteem, and glory in Athens when taking an active part in political life and serving in the Athenian military.
