;. Tennyson's great skill in poetry gained him fame and prestige in the University. In 1829, Tennyson was invited to join an exclusive group called "The Apostles". The club periodically met and discussed philosophical issues and events of their time.
             Tennyson met many individuals in the Apostles that would later become his lifelong friends. One in particular was held in the highest regards for Tennyson. His name was Arthur Hallam, he was a precociously brilliant young man seen to his peers as having unusual promise.".
             At about the same time that Alfred met Arthur; he received the chancellor's medal for his poem "Timbuctoo". The poem received praise from Hallam "the splendid imaginative power that pervades it will be seen through all hindrances". Right after "timbuctoo", Tennyson published "Poems (Chiefly Lyrical).
             In 1830, both Arthur and Alfred joined the Spanish insurgent army. On their way to France to complete a mission, the duo found that the armies were in disarray and therefore they felt that they were no longer needed so they returned to England. On their return to Somersby, Alfred introduced Hallam to his family. Hallam then fell in love with Alfred's sister, Emily Tennyson, and later got engaged.
