Women Study

             Human behavior leads to traditions. Traditional beliefs evolve into stereotypical thinking such as: "Male is placed above female, thin above fat, economically privileged above poor, and so forth." Come to probe the first part of the statement "male is placed above female"; is this really a stereotype that originated from core human behaviors? In the book "Women's Voice", the authors, Susan Shaw and Janet Lee indicate that women are living under men due to different cultural tradition and expectations to become the submissive role player in a family or society. I can relate Shaw and Lee's point of view to myself because I see those traits do exist quite commonly in my own culture. In today's society, women should be treated equally as men.
             To understand how the women's roles are played, we must define what women are. When I was young, it seems much easier to define what a girl/woman is. As long as I act cute and play with my dolls, I can do the girl's role perfectly! However, as I matured, the role gets more complicated because I have learned more about my society and what's being accepted. I also formed my own opinions of myself as in how I want to present myself to play a role that will be more advantageous to myself. For instance, this is the definition for a normal woman according to Susan Shaw and Janet Lee, "White, middle-class, heterosexual, abled, thin, and a young adult. Women not fitting these categories often tend to be considered different." Something that used to be so simple in childhood seems to be very complex now. Perhaps most people in the society lost their childhood innocence a long time ago, and everything has to have clear definition to play its role.
