In today's society a father is looked upon as the head of the household and the one who is suppose to provide for his family whenever they are in need even if it causes him to suffer. As we see Tom does not do this because he does not pay the light bill. A father also is very protective of his daughter and will always try to lift her up so that see will believe that she is pretty, and never let her heart be broken by a no good man. Tom does not do this for his sister, which causes Laura to have a low self-esteem. We see this when she states "I just went walking"(page 1273) when she was supposed to go to the typing instructor and saying "but, mother I'm crippled"(page 1275).
