Ernest Hemmingway used irony for almost every character. Some examples are Robert, Jake, and Brett. He doesn't make it very obvious but you can notice it in each character. He puts the irony in the way that it describes the character and also the way that they act in a crowd.
             First I want to look at Jake. His first girl that we meet is Georgette. He invites her to dinner and on the way to the restaurant she tries to kiss him. He turns her down because he says that he is sick. He is sick in a way that does not allow him to have sex. He invited georgette just to have company because he is getting lonely. He takes her to a restaurant and meets up with his friends. They go to a dance club and he finds out how much of a harlot that she is. He leaves with his true love Brett. He takes her on a carriage ride and he confesses his love. She turns him down because of his handicap. Here is one of the biggest acts of irony. Here is a woman who is a basically a harlot because her heart was broken in the war. She was a nurse and lost a soldier that she fell in love. Now here is a man who was hurt in the war that stops him from having sex. You have a man that loves a woman that once loved an injured soldier. She is turning him down because he can not satisfy her.
             Robert Cohn is another example of more irony. The first is that in that time of history there were very few non-catholics in any Ivy League schools. Here you have successful Jewish student that also became an accomplished Boxer. Robert used to his advantage because he says that his nose was flattened and many people don't become racist against him. Only one person is racist and that is mike. He takes his anger out on him Cohn. Cohn takes most of the personal attacks till the end. Near the end of the book he becomes violent. He gets in a fist fight with Mike and with Jake. He uses his boxing skills and hurts both of them.
