Does a person have the right to die when he or she chooses to do so? Is euthanasia really ¡°good death¡±(Singer, 10)? Legalizing euthanasia has become a hot issue not only to the doctors but also to people who are concerned about it. Recently, Holland became the first country to legalize euthanasia. (Shaprio). I agree that people have freedom to do anything they want to do, but death is something that shouldn¡¯t be controlled by a human¡¯s power. Thus, the U.S. government should not legalize euthanasia.

In order to euthanasia occur, a person must have an intention to kill whether the motive is good or bad. In most cases, it¡¯s not the terminally ill person who initiates euthanasia; a request usually comes from the patient¡¯s family or doctor. Assisting suicide defies one¡¯s desire to live. It is absolutely a crime, and it should be banned. (Euthanasia Definitions)
Another reason why euthanasia shouldn¡¯t be legalized is that it violates religious beliefs. Most Christians and Catholics think it is a sin to commit or assist suicide. They believe Life is a gift from God. Therefore, they believe only God can start a life, and only God should be the one to end one. Of course, not everyone agrees with this idea. People with different religions might argue that a person has the right to die peacefully. However, euthanasia is still killing. The definition of the word can never be changed.( Religious and Ethical Aspects of Euthanasia)
Besides, euthanasia is not always the final choice for a terminally ill patient. There is an alternative way. A terminally ill patient can reduce his or her pain by taking proper treatments such as adequate pain management. This suggests there is no real need for euthanasia.
