The Caves of Steel

For our first book report I chose the book The Caves of Steel by Isaac Asimov. This book was set on earth far in the future, in around the year 3300. Most of the story takes place in either New York City, the largest city on Earth, or Space Town, the colony set up by inhabitants from one of the outer worlds. The two communities really show the different ways of life adapted by their population. Earth has become so over populated that the cities are now built mainly underground, just like caves of steel. The Spacers are descendants of Earthmen who left the Earth to live on the other planets. Their colony is a series of large domes with lots of space, just like when they had all that area on their other planets. Earthmen distrust the Spacers and the Spacers feel that the Earthmen are full of diseases that the Spacers had gotten rid of long ago.
The Caves of Steel is about a man called Elijah Baley who is appointed the job of solving the murder of an important Spacer. Elijah was chosen because his friend, the commissioner, Julius Enderby, thought that he could ask a favor of him. Julius told Elijah that he would have to work and live with a robot until they solved the murder. This was a big favor to ask because, like most Earthmen, Elijah hated and distrusted all robots. Robots were taking jobs away from human workers and this meant that the people had a much harder life. Elijah was surprised by his new partner because R. Daneel Olivaw was a super-advanced robot who was built in his designer's image. He looked exactly like Dr. Sarton, the murdered Spacer.
The story is really a murder mystery that is set in the future. It takes you through all the steps that Elijah follows in order to solve the crime. There are a few interesting twists and turns and some extra problems that Elijah has to deal with before he can figure out who the criminal is.
The Caves of Steel was an excellent book. It is very futuristic,...
