The Boxcar children/ personal commitment paper/ kids lit.

             Lot's of different kinds of people read children's literature. They expect a great story that is fun and exciting. The Boxcar Children is just one out of many great stories. This book is full of adventure, drama, mystery, and even a little comedy. I choose this story to be one of the best in children's literature because it's not only fun and exciting but, the book also teaches children a great deal about responsibility, survival, and family.
             The main characters of the story are four young children who are brothers and sisters. Henry is the oldest then, Jessie is the older sister, Violet is the younger sister and Benny is the youngest boy. The all four children are the center of the plot. They are orphans since both of their parents died. They ran away so that their grandpa wouldn't find them. They thought that he didn't like them because he had never come to see them before. They were afraid that he would be mean to them. While they were gone, they took good care of each other. Henry and Jessie acted as the parents for the younger two. They made sure that the four of them were always together and never separated. Henry acted as the primary care giver. This is shown when he goes out in search of a job so that he can get money for all of them to eat. He also shows great concern about his siblings being on their own while he was away. When the children find a boxcar to take shelter in, Henry helped make beds out of pine needles for them to sleep on. He also makes sure they have a place to bathe and make food on a fire. Jessie acts as the mother for Violet and Benny. She made sure that they ate just the right amount of food and had enough left over for the next day. She made sure the younger kids and the boxcar stayed clean. After She, Violet, and Benny came back from the dump with new dishes, Jessie made certain that they were cleaned before they ate off of them. Jessie also taught her younger brothe...
