David Crockett was born in Green County, Tennessee near the mouth of Limestone Creek on the Nolichucky River (Hause, Early Life page). John and Rebecca Crockett's son was born on August seventeenth 1786. David's grandparents were killed by the Creek and Chickamuga Indians before he was born. His uncle James Crockett was held captive by the same Indians until David's father found him and was forced to purchase him back (Early Life page).
             David's father purchased several different plots of land while David was growing up. Buying land was an easy way to erase debt apparently (Shackford, page 6). You could hold on to it until the value was raised, cut and sale lumber or charge people to hunt on the land. John Crockett purchased a plot of land right down the road from Carson Newman College. Almost three hundred acres bordering Mossy Creek on the edge of Jefferson County were purchased for fifty shillings per hundred acres. The land was owned by the Crockett family until 1794 (6).
             David started school around the age of thirteen. He had not been there to long before he got into a fight with bully. After school David ambushes the bully and gets into another fight that the teacher had to brake up again. David skipped school the next day to try to avoid being punished but that just made it worst when David's father found out about the incident (Early life). His father hit him for what had happened. The punch caused David to runaway from home (Early life).
             David had to fend for himself for the next two years of his life. He worked odd jobs when he could. He traveled around the state a little bit. Trying to live of the land was harder than he thought. David's family owned some taverns close to the homestead, so David headed for them. His stay in the taverns was short lived before his sister noticed him and told her parents. David was reunited with his family for the first time in two year...
