The much anticipated prom season is almost here again and for
teenage girls this means the stress of buying dresses, making hair
appointments and decided who to go with. Although that is exciting, for
many families painful memories of past prom seasons make each
passing one seem like nothing more than a reoccurring nightmare.
Fatalities due to the use of alcohol and drug use are probably
the most preventable deaths among teenagers today. Even though
a lot of teens do not use drugs or alcohol regularly statistics show
that they are more likely to use them on prom night than on an
ordinary day. This type of drug use is called social drug use but if
it happens on numerous occasions the user can become addicted.
Social drug use is usually caused by peer pressure and teens use
drugs when they get together which means are they very likely to
drive while under the influence or ride with someone that is.
If it isn't bad enough that thousands of teens use drugs
everyday, and even more on prom night, users do not realize that
they are also endangering the lives of others. In 2001, 16,652
deaths were caused by car accidents that occurred while driving
under the influence. In most cases the intoxicated driver survives
with few minor injuries and the deaths are of innocent victims.
Many organizations have been formed over the years to make
society aware of the effects of drunk driving, such as SADD
(Students Against Drunk Driving) and MADD (Mothers Against
Drunk Driving). With excitement of prom in my thoughts this year
my main concern is not what I will wear or who I will go with but
that it will be a drug-free, safe prom.
