             Among homosexual/bisexual students, 34% has been harassed due to their sexual orientation. Of these, they are 3 times more likely to be injured in a fight that requires medical attention. Furthermore, about 75% of homosexual students reported feeling unsafe in school and have considered, at least once, suicide. (TSSA-VP)
             When a teenager realizes for the first time, that their sexual preference is abnormal, they feel it extremely hard to tell anyone. They are most often scared of their peer's reaction. Homophobia (irrational fear of homosexuals) is also an enormous fear; everyday homosexual teenagers are persecuted in school because of their sexual orientation.
             In many cases of homosexuality, teenagers lose their family, friends, and every other place of acceptance. The overwhelming sense of abandonment is so great; the teenager perhaps fears that they will be kicked out of their house, or that their friends and family will nothing more to do with them. Teenagers don't know how to feel or react to this kind of stress and tension. A lack of support makes it hard for a homosexual teen to trust anyone with their secret. The feeling of rejection makes it hard to 'come out'. Family and friends often disown them and society looks down on them, leaving the teenager feeling confused and lonely. The high rate of suicide among gay and lesbian students is often the result of a sense of profound seclusion and isolation among their peers.
             Violence is a common occurrence when a homosexual reveals himself. Many anti-gay crimes leave teenagers feeling fearful, unloved, and unaccepted.
