Education of Poor Children

e children who want to attend a private or non-sectarian school in Milwaukee. This program is still in its early stages, but has been successful so far (Committee on Labor and Human Resources, 1997). A third program in Milwaukee, Empowering Parents for Informed Choices in education (EPIC) is designed to help a parent make informed decisions about their children's education. EPIC is a resource that contains information about public, private and religious K-12 schools in Milwaukee. EPIC also has a website that allows a parent to look for a school that best fit the needs of their children (EPIC: Empowering Parents for informed choices in education). Indiana is another state that is lobbing for publicly funded education system. An organization called Families Organized for Real Choice in Education is pushing the state of Indiana to help pay for children who are in poverty to attend private schools. The Indiana government want to help low-income children get a better education by giving more funding to public schools, instead of private (Committee on Labor and Human Resources, 1997). There are currently thirty-one states, including Washington, D.C. that help fund federal preschool programs (Subcommittee on Children and Families, 2000). Not all parents are unhappy with the education the public schools are giving their children. Some parents are very happy with the education their child is receiving, and do not want to send their child to a private school. There are many more organizations out there that want to help poor children get a better education.
             The Federal government helps disadvantaged children by providing federal funds. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) is the Federal government's largest investment in elementary and secondary education. It was authorized in 1965, and was to expire in five years.
