             One of the major points that distinguished this film from the other war movies created recently was that it was the first film to tackle the Gulf War as previously mentioned. This brings up a very interesting social point. The film although fictional bases it's narrative around a war that actually happened. This can prove difficult for the filmmakers, as the backdrop to the film has to be as close to the reality as possible. Also with this film being the first to look at the Gulf War, it will be this film that all others are compared.
             With this in mind O'Russell researched the Gulf War, using footage from CNN, the LA Time's day by day diary of the war, and eye witness accounts from both sides (American and Iraqi). He received pictures of Iraq in an attempt to re-create the aesthetics of the surroundings.
