Of course these aspects and techniques are not the only variables influencing the success of a play, for certainly the directors interpretation and ideas and also the ability of the actors play a large part in this as well, but they can only act of the basis of the script which the playwright has written. Playwrights can also put in dialogue or outside comments the way which they intend the characters to move and this is just one way that the playwright can influence the acting and not just the speech.
             In 'Macbeth' the idea of ambition is common throughout the play. This performs well on stage because of the characters tensions and other techniques Shakespeare has included. The idea of the witches is one such technique. By including the three witches, who make regular appearances, the audience can see a correlation between ambition and the witches. Furthermore the conclusion can be drawn that ambition is actually caused or at the very least, influenced by these evil hags and that the growing ambition stems from the surrounding evil. This does help Macbeth shed some responsibility as he develops as the traditional tragic hero. The witches can be seen as evil and the cause of ambition personified. By using them to symbolise this, the audience is able to understand this particular aspect of the issue clearer and simpler and are thus able to see the influence and relationship between ambition and Macbeth's actions.
             By using the witches we are also presented with an apparently pre-destined storyline. The witches give clues and premonitions which often characters do not fully understand. This plays out well for it is often the audience who are often more informed and objective than the characters.
