RP molecules adhere weakly to DNA upon collision and RP slides fast along DNA until RP dissociates again. However, when RP slides into promoter region, starting point for RNA synthesis, RP binds to it. RP through sigma factor recognizes DNA sequence via specific contacts with bases exposed on outside of helix.
