Reality Shows

             Popular culture presents itself all around us. It's in the movies, it's in television, it's in fashion, it's everywhere. Popular culture tells us how to dress, what is success, it tell us what is "cool" and what is "in" at the moment. At this point in time, the new "in" thing is reality shows. They are everywhere, they are "cool" they have become a part of popular culture. Reality television is a new type of programming that showcases real people, not actors, in different environment and situations. It lets us look into the lives of others, and live it with them, it allows us to share moments and experiences with them. We spend a large portion of our lives watching television, therefore it's no doubt that reality shows have become a huge part of popular culture today.
             In the world of reality based television, there are four main types of shows. The first is when the viewers and the cameras/crew are simply observing the cast doing their daily activities. In this type, there are many hours of footage that never make it to television, therefore producers can mold and shape the show to play up certain stereotypes or character traits of the cast. These types of shows are not new, in fact, one of the first reality shows was broadcast on PBS in 1973. The series American Family aired in twelve episodes, and followed the lives of a family going through divorce. The following year, the UK came out with their version of the American Family, simply called The Family. Later in 1992, Australia aired Sylvania Waters. All three of these shows attracted a lot of controversy, because it was such a new thing, and it was followed families during difficult and private moments. Modern examples of these types of shows are in abundance, take for example some of the more popular ones : The Real World, The Osbournes, The Anna Nicole Show and the newest addition Newlyweds : Nick & Jessica....
