Reality Shows


             The second type of reality television programming is the hidden camera shows. These types of shows keep hidden cameras rolling while unsuspecting victims encounter a wide variety of staged encounters, ranging from the hilarious and absurd, to the dangerous and risky. Allen Funt, an American Pioneer in reality entertainment, was the first to lead the way in this direction. He created Candid Microphone for the ABC Radio Network in 1947, and later created Candid Camera in 1953. Today, the stunts and the pranks shows are becoming much more elaborate, with shows like Ashton Kutcher's Punk'd focusing primarily on playing practical jokes on celebrities.
             The third type of reality program is the reality "game shows", in which participants compete to win a prize. The difference between these and regular game shows are that the contestants are filmed in an enclosed environment and the producers can control and manipulate the format of the show. This leads to the question of how real these shows are. Another things that differentiates regular game shows from the reality versions are that often the viewers can play a role, by either deciding the outcome (such as Canadian/American Idol) or voting for their favorite cast members (such as in Big Brother, the viewers decide on things like which cast member they want to get a phone call from home).
