Ferdinand I had many promises that once the mainland of Naples and Sicily were united that there would be a great reform and provide the citizens with a constitutional government that would be fair to all the people. That did not happen and many were upset. For years under his rule, the farmers, the workers, and just the ordinary people of Sicily were treated very unfairly and they decided that this was not the way to live. This is how the Mafia came into play.
             It was during this rule that the people needed some sort of protection from the wealthy and the politicians that were basically running Sicily. The law enforcement at the time was very corrupt and it favored certain citizens more than just the average Sicilian. Protection and support was needed for these common Sicilians, and so a group of respected Sicilian men formed a tight knit group that would give the people the support that it needed to live a safe and fair life. They were known as "Robin Hoods" or even "knights. The Sicilian Mafia looked out for its people in times of trouble. They were the "men of honor" or also known as the Mafia.
             Now as time progressed the Mafia migrated to the land of opportunity or also known as the United States of America. The American Mafia has undergone many changes. From the Black Hand gangs around 1900 and the Five Points Gang in the 1910s and 1920s in New York City, to Al Capone's Syndicate in 1920s Chicago It was at the end of the 1920s that a major war in the American-Italian Mafia had formed two important families that would make up La Cosa Nostra. These two families were the Genovese and the Gambino family.
