             Unfortunately, he finds the horrors of war are worse than the horrors at
             home, and while he rises in rank, he never really fits in the community of
             war either, for underneath his unemotional exterior is a man who cannot
             forget his sister, and the love he has lost.
             Patrick is also searching for himself and where he fits in the
             community. He lacks love, and he seeks out companionship and community
             almost desperately wherever he goes, as this passage indicates. "Something
             hollow, so when alone, when not aligned with another- whether is was
             Ambrose or Clara or Alice - he could hear the rattle within that suggested
             a space between him and community. A gap of love" (Ondaatje.157). Patrick
             also suffered from alienation from his family, and it affects how he fits
             into the larger community, as well as his estrangement from his family.
             Love is the only thing that can help our own identity, and aid us in
