             hand, engaged in "wars on conquest" (Barnett, 1968) and additionally had to
             fight to protect an expansive border and a large specified geographic area.
             The expense and difficulty of guarding this border was one of the
             contributing factors to Rome's downfall.
             The difference in goals would have contributed to a difference in
             tactics. Barbarian leaders such as Alaric were famous for being capable of
             continuously avoiding capture by Roman troops, while wrecking havoc
             throughout the countryside. Alaric and his troops were flexible and
             difficult to defeat because they were mobile. (King, 2004) Rome may have
             been vulnerable to the degree that it was overextended and unable to defend
             all of its Imperial holdings and commercial allied interests while
             maintaining resources sufficient for its quality of life. (Barnett, 1968)
