This makes it appear that the right decision is that which was made, which is to not allow Mr. Lamaze to participate in the Sydney Olympics. There are rules and there are consequences for breaking the rules and Mr. Lamaze is aware of the requirements he submitted to by becoming an athlete for Canada.
             It is important to note, however, that the circumstances of the incident in question indicate that there is more to this incident that meets the eye. The facts cannot be taken at face value, but rather must be evaluated with greater scrutiny. This is inherently recognizable by the fact that Mr. Lamaze was re-instated to the Canadian amateur sports system despite failing two drug tests (CBS Sports 2000). After his appeal, it was understood and accepted that a "catastrophic set of circumstances" that had no bearing on his athletic participation led to the use of the drugs causing the suspension (CBS Sports 2000). A comprehensive report by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sports validates these findings as it is noted that Mr. Lamaze received false information about being banned for life from Canadian athletics. His response was consistent with psychological shock and thus led him into a state in which he lost control of his actions. While he admits that he can "make no excuse," as we all know he is responsible for his own actions, there comes a time when the facts need to be understood in context (CBS Sports 2000).
