He became a student under the wing of the famous Romanian economics teacher Nicholas Georgescu Roegen. Although Roegen was known as a terror, the two got a long well and Roegen taught Yansu that nothing is ever as complicated as it appears. This was a lesson he would follow in the future.
             In 1970, Yunus married and moved to Nashville, where he taught at Middle Tennessee State University. Everything was going well until he heard on the news that the Pakistani army had moved in to block all political opposition against the government; the leader of the independence movement had fled. All the Bengalis at the university met to discuss this move against them. Yunus stated that "Bangladesh had declared its independence and everyone had to choose whether they would be part of this new country or not. Anyone who did not would be considered Pakistani and an enemy of the state. As a result, they formed the Bangladesh Citizens' Committee. They sent out a press release, donated $1,000 to create a fund for the struggle of their people and promised to give 10 percent of their monthly salary to the fund until Bangladesh was independent.
             Meanwhile, the Bangladesh League of America was formed, with offices in New York and Chicago. For the next nine months Yunus, who ran the information center, drew up the plan for Bangladesh, which won its war of independence in 1971. Three million people had died in the war and another 10 million had left the country. Millions more had been raped or injured and millions needed to be rehabilitated.
