The Moral Dilemma of Euthanasia

, to search for good in everyone, and to respect the rights of others. All of these intrinsic values are reflected in my actions and behaviors. I try to make good choices, choices that good for my family. And although, I am not a practicing Catholic: I still base my actions on the Ten Commandments and I believe in an afterlife and that what you do here reflects on what happens there. I learned from watching my father and others who set altruistic examples. I consider myself to possess a variety of good attributes such as integrity, courage, honesty, and loyalty. But all of these qualities didn't make the decision to take care for and finally to euthanize my mother any less difficult. In fact, I think it made the decision that much more challenging and it showed through my abuse of pharmaceutical drugs, an addiction that kept me in its insidious hold for more than 4 years after. An addiction so strong that right and wrong became blurred; I no longer possessed the ability to choose between the two. The drugs, usually pain killers, started me on a roller coaster of unhealthy decision making for my family mostly in the neglect of obligations and the dishonesty to myself and those around me.
             Morals and ethics two words that can be used interchangeably; however, consider the following distinctions when using them. Morals are feelings derived from personal conscience based on individual principles which suggest the rightness and wrongness of an act. And Ethics are a system of moral principles governing the rightness and wrongness of an act of a person or society, usually set up by the society. But if the person making the decision believes strongly that their decision is correct then there can be no blame. The following is a testament of my strong sense of duty, ethics and morals which I processed in the events leading up to the decision of euthanasia in regards to my mother even though I was under the influence of drugs.
