             In the text book three categories of misconduct and corruption are described and provided with details as to what actions define them. The book defines misuse of authority as the act of accepting gratuities for special consideration for legitimate purposes or for protection of illicit activities, mistreatment/harassment or extortion of inmates, mismanagement, and miscellaneous abuses. The book also defines corrupt actions as the arbitrary use of power (treating workers or inmates preferentially or in a bias fashion), oppression and failure to demonstrate compassion/caring, and abusing authority for personal gain (extortion, smuggling, and theft). The book also gives us the definition of another type of misconduct labeled as prisoner abuse, the book lists three types of prisoner abuse, the first being Malicious or purposeful abuse described as, abuse that is intentionally by officers like excessive use of force, rape, sexual harassment, theft, destroying inmate's personal property, false disciplinary charges, intentionally denying inmates medical care, and excessive humiliation like humiliating strip searches. The second abuse is, Negligent abuse defined as abuse inflicted by individual officers unintentionally such as, negligent denial of medical care, failure to protect, lack of responsiveness, and negligent loss of an inmate's property or mail.
