             Following the war a number of different groups emerged that created problems for the Weimar Republic through violence and terror. Firstly, the Spartacists, a communist group led by Rosa Luxembourg and Karl Liebknecht, attempted a coup d'etat in 1919 in Munich. The uprising took most of Munich, but the coup failed. The socialist government, led by President Friedrich Ebert, used the communist hating Freikorps to crush the Spartacist uprising, in which Luxembourg and Liebknecht were killed.
