The Holy Eucharist, which is also referred to as the Mass is also a celebration of Thanksgiving from the events of the Jewish Passover to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the Cross whose blood had saved the people from the depths of eternal damnation. It is a memorial event for the Church community to gather together in celebration of the command of Jesus to love and to do it in memory of him. It is lastly a celebration with Jesus who real presence resides in the substance of bread and wine and also in the sacramental elements of the biblical readings of the day, the presence of the priest and the gathering of the community.
The new Australian Religious Education Curriculum focuses its teaching of the Eucharist across Australia in the following categories: the historical foundations of the Eucharist, Jesus' mission in the world, expression of reconciliation and forgiveness, e.g., penitential rite, Eucharistic prayers, and prayers before communion, e.g., sign of peace and spiritual life of believers (Brisbane Catholic Education, 2013). The elaboration of these skills seems to pattern with the trend from the Second Vatican Council, which is in tuned with connecting with the experiences of the world today. The new RE curriculum's approach to learning the Eucharist is operating within the notion of: learning from the past for visioning a better future in light of peace, justice and reconciliation for all.
