             A HISTORY OF CHOCOLATE AND HERSHEY FOODS
             Chocolate, or the cocoa bean, was discovered in America and has been consumed in some form since at least 460 AD. Following Cortez's conquest of the Aztec Indians, the commercial possibilities of the cocoa bean was realized. Since the Aztecs considered the drink made from the cacao bean as, "food for gods," Spain kept it a secret from the rest of Europe for almost 100 years.              By 1828, the invention of the cocoa press reduced prices, put a cup of chocolate within the financial reach of the common man, and enabled the extract of the cocoa butter, improving the consistency and flavor of the chocolate drink we enjoy today. However, chocolate's potential had not been fully realized and in 1847, an English company introduced "solid eating chocolate. In addition, a Swiss candy maker developed the process of adding milk to the chocolate.
             During World War II, chocolate was used to bolster the spirits of the Allied Armed Forces by providing necessary nourishment until food rations became available. As a result, even today's U.S. Army D-rations contain chocolate bars.
