The medieval period soon evolved and from 1450 until 1600, the renaissance period was formed. Renaissance (meaning rebirth) was the period of music where people became interested in learning, discovering, exploration and culture. Composers from this period started studying new ways of writing secular music including pieces that only used one instrument. Although composers were investigating new types of secular music, it was sacred music that still maintained a strong part in society and some of the greatest pieces from the renaissance period were composed for the church. One of the most important composers of church music in Italy was Palestrina. All of his musical pieces were entirely for voice and always sung in Latin. There are several different types of church music from the renaissance period. A mass (a roman catholic service set to music) was vocal only, sung in Latin, polyphonic and accapella. A mass can also be subcategorised into five different parts: the kyrie, the Gloria, the credo, the Sanctus and the Benedictus. These are simply identified as the words sung throughout each piece. Another sacred work, which is similar to the mass, is the motet. This can be identified in a similar way to the mass. The main difference between the two is the length of the piece. Where a mass is a whole service, a motet is a short piece. It, like the mass is sacred and it is also contrapuntal (2 or more parts played or sung together with independent melodies and rhythms).
