sities of daily life. According to Hobbes' men are all equal in the state of nature. At first this sounds nice, but being equal is what makes us competitive and self-interested. If we are all equal we will always be fighting to try and become better than someone else. Being equal will cause violence and resentment between people. This making the original state of nature a condition of constant war, which rational people would not want. In the state of nature there is no way for anyone to form true friendship; man would always be worried that their things would be taken. There is nothing that says someone can not take your things. Now we would consider people stealing our things an injustice. Hobbes on the other hand said that there is not justice or injustice in the state of nature.
To this war of every man against every man, this also is consequent; that nothing can be unjust. The notions of right and wrong, justice and injustice have there no place. Where there is no common power, there is no law: where no law, no injustice (Hobbes 404).
This thought brings about an important point, that everyone has the right to private property. Having private property makes distinctions in the world. Everyone has desires and wants, which is a necessity to life. Hobbes calls this the "right of nature" and the "law of nature". The "right of nature" is the liberty that each man has. That is using his judgment and reason when doing something. The "law of nature" is a general rule that forbids a man from doing something that harms him self or another. Hobbes says that there are times that this rule can be broken. If someone has harmed you in any way, you have the right to seek "peace" and harm them back.
