In this research project, there are three subjects, which include two 4th graders and one 5th grader. The subjects are asked a series of questions from the MASC Diagnostic Assessment (Yellow). The questions involve the following seven major categories:
             • Backward Number Word Sequence
             After the subjects have taken the assessment, there are numbers of similar areas where all three subjects have problems with.
             Both the 4th graders have minor addition and subtraction and multiplication and division problems, while the 5th grader did well. More specifically, the problems that the 4th graders had been geared more towards mental math. Though it seems that they have a good general concept of these simple arithmetic tools, the 4th graders were not able to solve more complicated arithmetic problems mentally such as 37- 9 (Question #2 on MASC), 5 X 16 (Question #5 on MASC) after knowing 5 X 8 = 40, and 3 X 18 (Question #6 on MASC) after knowing 3 X 20 = 60. The Proportions and Ratios section, on the other hand, seemed to be a little confusing to all three subjects, more so to the 4th graders. Both 4th graders were not able to answer the jelly beans question where they have to figure out how many jelly beans they get if they eat one third of the cake after spreading out 12 jelly beans evenly. All three subjects had a problem on answering the problem of what is ¾ of 28. As a result, one can see that the three subjects all had problem dividing a whole number with a fraction number. The Fraction Number section further proves this point, for all three subjects had some troubles with two of the problems from this section. They all had a hard time trying to put a list of fractions in order from smallest to largest and figuring out what other fractions are the same as 8/6.
