             Carrie, a well known American legend was first published in Britain in 1974. From then on until this day the legend of Carrietta White a high school girl rejected from society and looked upon as a 'loner' by her fellow classmates, has been retold all over the world, occasionally being brought up in popular films, such as 'Never been kissed'.
             The book begins with a report of occurrences in the Whites family household. From this report, we are introduced to the two main characters in this book, Carrietta and her mother, Margaret White. The book then carries on to scenes in Carrie's school. As the story line progresses, we learn about how Carrie has been tormented and abused by her fellow pupils and family members. Carrie's dream comes true when she is asked to the prom by the high school 'heart throb' Tommy Ross. When they get voted prom King and Queen things seem to be going too smoothly for Carrie's liking. Later she finds out the reason why she was asked to the prom by Tommy and voted prom Queen. She then exercised her terrifying gift of telekinesis on the town that mocked and loathed her. The results were stunning.
             Carrie might have been influenced by the era in which it was written in. The 1970's were filled with ideas about 'mind', 'body' and 'soul'. The special talent/ability to move objects with the thought of mind. This could be where Stephen King came up with the idea of this book. Bringing to life everyone's expectations.
