Why is it that the way we look and dress says so much about who we are as a person? Is it really fair to say that we can tell a lot about someone by the clothes that they are wearing or the car they are driving? If this is the case, then why is it that so many of today's Americans try to dress like one another? Maybe it is because the fashion industry leaves no room for self expression, or maybe it is the fact that most of society is insecure with how they look and so they go with what is "in style" according to the media. People are too busy defining themselves in society's standards that they have no time to define who they are in their own perspective. It is true that fashion expresses one's personality, but most people are too impressionable to hold their own opinion yet alone their own fashion style. If clothing is supposed to show who we are, then all it is really showing is how we care too much about being accepted in the world's standards instead of our own. As each era passes, generations become more obsessed with the idea of fitting in rather then taking a chance on the aspect of individuality.
             In the article "What is the Self," by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, the author states that "If human evolution is to continue, it will be because of our trying to live up to increasingly complex images of our selves" (268). Nowadays, the majority of people are not completely satisfied with their self image, which leads to the continuous effort to reach this point of perfection. We have been led to believe that acceptance is impossible, unless we fit the image of what Mihaly refers to as the "ideal self." The ideal self that he discusses is someone who is ultimately flawless and perfect in every aspect. This is impossible, because no one is perfect and everyone is different in their own way.
