back to the hotel in the rain"(294) is the very last sentence of the novel and its significance is deep. Henry is shown as a fake mourner after the death of his girlfriend. As a matter of fact, rain falls just after Henry visited Catherine's dead body at the hospital. Thus, death is reinforced by the presence of rain, this latter being used, in this case, as a substitute for Catherine's death.
             Second, the structure of the novel also relies upon Hemingway's language. His own experience of war is shifted onto the main male character, Frederic. This means that the reader has to feel Hemingway's widespread disillusionment during the Great War through Frederic's own disappointment. The subtlety is that emotions as well as feelings are conveyed through language. This is the "principle of the iceberg". Hemingway suggests ideas through vivid and clear words, but he does not explain every signification in detail:
             Catherine: "I didn't know about anything then. I thought it would be worse for him. I thought perhaps he couldn't stand it and then of course he was killed and that was the end of it."
