I thought to myself, "Sure it was the sixties and music was different back then, but how could a bunch of two-minute, happy-go-lucky songs sung by four British guys have such a large impact on so many people from all over the world." This is probably because at the time my Beatles listening experience consisted entirely of "Penny Lane," "Love Me Do," "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and "Hard Day's Night." Nevertheless, I felt like I had missed out on something very special given the way people talked about the Beatles. So, being a member of the Honors Program and having some room in my schedule, I decided to take the Legacy of the Beatles course not because I was a devoted fan like the majority of the students in the class, but because I was curious to know more about what made the Beatles who they were and why they had a class dedicated to them in the first place. Looking back sixteen weeks later, I can honestly say I am so glad I made that choice. I have gained such a deeper understanding of the Beatles' importance in music history, and the reservations I had about their greatness have definitely been reconciled. I can now officially say I'm on the Beatles bandwagon (although I still don't know that they're more popular than Christ). It did, however, take the majority of the semester for me to get to this point as the class discussions and lectures raised more questions for me than they answered at first. I was utterly confused about why there were popular competitions on who could answer the most Beatles trivia questions, why frantic girls soiled themselves out of pure excitement at their concerts, why some of our guest speakers were so joyful just talking about them, why Sri wore shirts with the Beatles' faces on them, and why John spent an entire class period dissecting what seemed like such a simple song in "If I Fell."
