wn as the Reconstruction period. They continued to terrorize blacks to prevent them from voting or practicing any other rights. Their sole purpose was to keep America clean and only allow White, Christian citizens to prosper.
             There were outbreaks of violence against blacks all over the South. Race riots popped up in Memphis and New Orleans. General Philip Sheridan was at New Orleans and he called the riot there a massacre. Thirty-four blacks and three white conspirators were killed. More than 100 more were injured. Some of the whites began to put masks over their faces and started acting like hoodlums. These new found mask wearers were running around and burning black churches and schools. The Klan quickly turned into a malicious gorilla group. After the Klan formed they started to dig up graves for treasure and jewelry. Without any care they ravaged black people and any white supporters, the Klan on more than one occasion beat, threatened, or killed anyone they didn't like. Mainly all the terrorizing was directly absorbed by the blacks, they received whippings, were often hung, they were robbed of all their belongings, and they were ravished all on a nightly basis. In one Louisiana parish in 1868, the whites in two days killed or wounded two hundred victims; a pile of twenty-five bodies was found half-buried in the woods. When the Klan knew where a secret meeting of black and white people was to be held they would ride through and disperse the group.
             Growing across the nation very rapidly, the Klan began to wear white robes and hoods to conceal their identity. Some Klan members even concealed their horses. These people didn't want anyone besides other members to know who they were. For some of them, revealing that they were Klan members would have destroyed their careers.
