While both Bob Carr and John Brogden during the 2003 state election signalled slogans such as "Securing New South Wales' future", "Tougher on Crime" and "Building on Strong Foundations", and attempted to outbid the other with a tougher plan for jailing convicted criminal for longer sentences, the NSW DPP condemned their moves through Sydney's ABC morning talk back radio by suggesting they lacked basic knowledge of the criminal justice system and the additional relevant statistics.
             The DPP stated "Being tough after the event is not going to prevent the offence, it's not going to undo the damage that it has done, or even stop similar events in the future. Increasing the number of people in prison has not been shown to reduce the incidence of criminal offending generally.
