d passed. The proclamation was called the Tennis Oath. The king has agreed to their demands, however there were rumors of troops gathering around the city of Paris, where the Assembly existed.
The fact that the troops where gathering outside of Paris has brought unrest to the city. The people thought that the king simply agreed to the Tennis Oath so he had time to leave Paris and bring the troops in to restore order.
Some decided to take action. Worried citizens joined the sparks of resistance and gathered rifles and whatever weapons they had. They then raged on to the Bastille, a strong and hated symbol of the king and his absolute power. The prison was poorly defended, and contained only seven prisoners. Non-the-less, when the prison was overtaken and then destroyed, the people of Paris were happy to have demolished such a reminder of absolutism. It was a memorable event that is celebrated to this day in France, on July 14th.
Approved by the National Assembly of France on August 26, 1789, The Declaration of the Rights of Man was the first constitutional document to be created in France. Since many believed that the lower classes of society were treated unfairly and abused, the new Declaration protected all people of France from abuse and disadvantage. The document stated basic rights of every person that could not be broken without a just punishment.
During the same year, the Bill Of Rights was passed in America. The two documents were similar in their content, and while the Declaration of the Rights of Man was an approved document, it was not a part of yet inexistent French Constitution; the Bill Of Rights was part of the American Constitution.
