             After reading the book and knowing finally that Santiago has caught the fish, one will learn that the old man is left with nothing. He works so hard for three days and ironically he loses all he has worked for. It is also ironic that Santiago loses all he has,
             yet he maintains a calmness inside him. Santiago respects the fact that the sharks had eaten the fish. He understands that they mean no harm, but only do what they must by nature.
             Man vs. nature is very important in the book. Triumph over the fish(nature) by Santiago(man). The man has God like abilities and attributes. Knowledge is given by God and the man uses it to catch his fish. Nature gets him back with its only ability: being instinct. Sharks use what they know from nature to defeat the man. There really isn't any triumph in the book because the man kills the sharks, and in man vs. nature there is no winner. (Robert O. Stephens 140)
             Self pride can be shown in the theme of Santiago." Pride and triumph usually comes from heroes and protagonists, that's what you would expect."(Ben Stoltzfus 70). Instead it comes from one man's own determination and desire. Santiago is old but his will is strong and helps him defeat the fish. He fights alone with all his strength to catch the fish. The younger fishermen make fun of him because he has not caught anything for eighty four consecutive days. Even though he is old, he is very strong and powerful, cheerful and confident. This pride in himself helps him the catch the fish.(stoltzfus 69).
             Human isolation is another theme. Santiago goes out by himself for three days with nothing to do but fish. Santiago recognizes the beauty of the sea and the things around him.
