auty. Santiago starts to appreciate the ocean and its creatures' fight for life. Santiago stays cheerful and talks to the animals of the sea as though they are his friends.(Williams 44). Isolation brings individuality and character. Santiago can not share his pain and agony with anyone because he is alone. Santiago stretches his own powers to the limit, defeating all the sea can throw at him. he presents a good attitude the whole time, even though his hands are chapped and bleeding. He fights on for his own individuality. Through all of his work, he attains a greater understanding of the meaning of life.(Nahal 157).
             The characters in the book all have a special meaning and a different type of symbolism.
             Santiago , the old man of the sea, is a thin, gaunt, wrinkled, and widowed, Cuban fisherman who has been fishing the Gulf Stream without a catch for eighty four days.
