Issue two: Compliance rather than commitment
The employees under Norman are acting only in compliance rather than in commitment to there jobs. The shipping clerks are apathetic toward their work and they are lacking an enthusiastic attitude toward their work. They are doing their jobs with minimal effort and refuse to work any harder for Norman due to his treatment of them
To reduce the amount of compliance and take steps toward commitment, Norman needs to reduce the amount of hostility in the workplace. He needs to stop verbally abusing and "chewing out" his employees in front of the entire staff. This will reduce employee stress and allow them to focus more clearly on their tasks at hand.
Developing an action plan to more effectively ship goods and sharing that plan with the employees may also increase commitment to his cause. By doing this he will be able to clarify his and the companies objectives to his employees. The disadvantage of this is that he will need to take time away from his and the employees day-to-day activities to develop the plan and then to share the plan with his subordinates.
Norman may want to begin working with his employees to identify mistakes and develop solutions to prevent them from reoccurring. The advantage of this is that employees will not feel as uptight about making mistakes and they will be more educated about how to prevent the mistakes for reoccurring.
Issue three: Misuse of political power
Norman has formed coalitions with several sales representatives. He has began bypassing the sales office and taking orders directly from sales representatives. The sales representatives receive priority shipping of their goods and in return they communicate favorable remarks about Norman to his boss.
