Toni Morrison: The Bluest Eye

r. Morrison uses the mature wisdom of the adult Claudia's narrative voice, who is able to bring back memories from her youthful innocence, and to show how the other characters worship the white standard of beauty represented by blue-eyed movie stars like Shirley Temple.
             The structure and typography of the novel suggests that the events described in The Bluest Eye have happened before, and will happen again.
             There are no conventional chapters and sections, the novel is divided into seasons instead- Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer.
             Small excerpts from the „Dick and Jane" primer refer to the section that follows. Morrison juxtaposes this primer, which is the epitome of the white middle and upper-middle class lifestyle, with the miserable living conditions of Pecola's Family, the Breedloves. The excerpt describing Dick and Jane's mother is followed by the section that is about the protagonist's mother, Pauline and so on. The excerpts that head each „chapter" are written without any spaces or punctuation marks. As Pecola's world falls apart in the novel, the Dick & Jane passages degenerate into formless, print: "seemothermotherisverynice." They show how dominant the images of white perfection are in Pecola's life and this strange structure illustrates how irrelevant and inappropriate these images are.
             Names in the novel often symbolize conditions in society or in the context of the story. The author chose an ironic name for the Breedlove family that represents the African-Americans who hate themselves, their blackness. The family completely lacks love.
