             Soaphead Church is a megalomaniac pedophile who plays God as a fortuneteller. His promise breaks Pecola's sanity. „I, I have caused a miracle. I gave her the eyes. I gave her the blue, blue, two blue eyes" (The Bluest Eye p. 143)
             The significance of Pecola's name is exposed when Maureen Peal confuses Pecola's name with the name of a character in a movie that has the title Imitation of Life. Morrison indicates that Pecola's life is an imitation, a presentation of the real experiences of black women, who are inable to meet society's standard of beauty, suffer from their constructed ugliness.
             Morrison also uses metaphors. The two major metaphors in The Bluest Eye are marigolds and dandelions. Claudia, remembering as an adult, says in the beginning of the book "there were no marigolds in the fall of 1941" (The Bluest Eye p. 7).
