People were unequal and there was nothing to be done, other than repent their earthiness and beg to an unforgiving, merciless God for pity. In Document I, page 1, David Brainerd only hopes that God would be moved to pity him. He mourns for his sins and focuses on the dreadfulness and vileness of his tainted soul, while knowing all the while that even with his suffering, his fate was still completely uncertain. The question of who God had chosen to save stirred these emotions of uncertainty and left people yearning for an answer regarding which direction, up or down, God would point his finger on judgment day. Calvinism left people feeling worthless, powerless and submissive unmotivated to strive for liberation in society. But this thirst to know one's fate lead to an entirely different religious movement that shaped views of God, religion, faith, one's own self-concept, and one's perception of their neighbors. This new theology called evangelicalism gave people, especially those suppressed, a choice to save one's self. This small liberty had a ripple effect that gave people strength to begin fighting for equality.
             Evangelicalism personified God as glorious, forgiving, accepting and loving as opposed to the Calvinist god who was judging, vengeful, and refusing. With evangelicalism salvation was in the hands of the being. You chose, you were not chosen. According to Nathaniel Taylor, "Sin is in the sinning," meaning that you have to power to the contrary. You have the ability to sin or not to sin. With Calvinism, sin was in the being, you were depraved simply by living.
