stem- this system differed greatly from farm work. In rural villages people worked hard, but their worked varied according to the season. In the factories, workers faced a rigid schedule set by the factory whistle.
             Luddites- rioters in England were called this after a mythical figure, Ned Ludd, who supposedly destroyed machines in the 1780's.
             Methodism- in the mid-1700's John Wesley had been the leader of a religious revival and founded the Methodist Church.
             Thomas Malthus- was one of many thinkers who tried to understand the staggering changes taking place in the early industrial age. Believed that population would lead to starvation, but he was wrong.
             The Iron Law of Wages- David Ricardo agreed with Malthus, that the poor had to many children. Ricardo noted that when wages were high families had more children, but more children increased the supply of labor, which led to lower wages and higher unemployment.
