In life, there are many components that make up a whole. Often we do no see the
little things that go behind the big picture. This is the case in times of war as well. Most
people think that in war there are just soldiers out in the field shooting at each other.
However there is more to warfare than just bullets flying everywhere. In the Vietnam
war, everyone knew about the Viet Cong and their tactics they used. What most people
do not know is that the United States also had their own strategies and counterinsurgency
tactics to counter the North Vietnam and Viet Cong. My purpose is to inform the readers
that the US, who talked so much of Vietnam's aggression into the South, also had their
own aggression and counterinsurgency tactics, which were very necessary and also very
atrocious and shocking as the Viet Cong. This aggression was carried out through a
highly secretive program called "The Phoenix Program".
The Phoenix Program was an operation to counter the Viet Cong. Before further
discussing what the Phoenix Program was, one must first truly understand the Viet Cong
to see why the United States felt it was necessary to install the Phoenix Program in the
Vietnam War. The Viet Cong Infrastructure, also known as VCI, were civilians that
were not a part of the North Vietnamese military organization. However, without the
VCI, the communist effort in South Vietnam would have never gotten off the ground.
the men and women, in South Vietnam, who used every possible means to assure that
communist ideology took hold in the countryside. They were the regular people, who
lived in the villages of the South, that carried out guerrilla warfare tactics on US troops.
What made the VCI so effective is that the US could not distinguish who the enemy was.
This was a tactic that Ho Chi Minh used to fight off the French out of Vietnam.
