             Besides loyal people, there were unlawful delinquents. Jack is also an important character in the novel. He is the novel's antagonist. When Ralph is voted leader he is angry, but takes his position as leader of the hunters. Jack longs for overarching power, he becomes increasingly wild, barbarous and cruel as the novel progresses. Jack's behavior leads directly to the murders of many boys. Jack would not be considered a loyal friend. He showed characteristics of being greedy and self-indulged. In the beginning, when the first get stranded on the island, they have a vote who to be chief. Jack thought that he should be chief. "I ought to be chief because I'm chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp" (Golding, 23) When they took the vote, only the choir boys voted for him, so he loses to Ralph, yet still appointed leader of the Hunters. By the end of the novel, Jack tries to get all of the other boys to turn on Ralph because of his jealousy of not being appo!
